Rachel is a Jewish woman living alone in a council flat in a tower block in the city. Never leaving the flat, Rachel stands at the window gazing out, making the bed, tidying, polishing, cooking, throwing away the food she has carefully prepared which will not be eaten, playing the piano badly, as though reminiscent of an earlier happier life. When her mother dies Rachel becomes fixated with two men searching for treasure on the building site opposite
